Ultram is the brand of Tramadol Hydrochloride tablets. It contains tramadol, a centrally acting synthetic opioid analgesic. Tramadol has been shown to inhibit the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin in vitro, as have some other opioid analgesics. These mechanisms may contribute independently to the overall analgesic profile of Ultram. Analgesia in humans begins approximately within one hour after administration and reaches a peak in approximately two to three hours. The extended-release form of this medicine is for around-the-clock treatment of pain. This form of Ultram is not for use on an as-needed basis for pain.

Ultram should not be given to a child nger than 12 years old. Ultram ER should not be given to anyone nger than 18 years old. Seizures have been reported in patients receiving Ultram within the recommended dosage range. Spontaneous post-marketing reports indicate that seizure risk is increased with doses of ULTRAM® above the recommended range. Patients taking tramadol should be warned not to exceed the dose recommended by their physician. Tramadol products in excessive doses, either alone or in combination with other CNS depressants, including alcohol, are a cause of drug-related deaths. Patients should be cautioned about the concomitant use of tramadol products and alcohol because of potentially serious CNS additive effects of these agents.
Ultram is a prescription medicine used to treat symptoms of moderate to severe pain. Ultram may be used alone or with other medications. Good pain management practice dictates that the dose of Ultram be individualized according to patient needs using the lowest beneficial dose.
Ultram may interact with other drugs including monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and other antidepressant medications. It is not suggested that to give this medicine to anyone nger than 18 years old who recently had surgery to remove the tonsils or adenoids and avoid giving this medicine to children between 12 to 18 years of age who have conditions that may cause breathing problems.
